AOKI Oil Builds Surfactant Plant in Ibaraki, Japan

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Last month, AOKI Oil Industrial Company Limited (Osaka, Japan), along with Kuraray Engineering Company Limited (TYO:3405) (Kamisu, Japan), began construction of a surfactant plant in Kamisu, Japan. Kamisu is in Ibaraki prefecture, which is approximately 120 kilometers northwest of Tokyo. AOKI currently operates two production facilities, one in Osaka and one in Shiga, and has a branch office in Tokyo.

The Kashima Kombinat Surfactant Plant construction is scheduled to be performed in three stages: a grassroot construction project and two expansions phases. AOKI uses ethylene oxide and propylene oxide to produce non-ionic surfactants, under the quality control system established by International System of Standardization standards. These non-ionic surfactants go on to be used in products and as intermediate polymers. Non-ionic surfactants often are used in toiletries, such as shampoo and conditioner, electronics materials and textile chemicals.

Construction of the US$33 million grassroot facility began in June and is scheduled for completion in the next second quarter. Once complete, it will begin production at a rate of 15,000 metric tons per year of non-ionic surfactant. Phase I construction is not set to begin until the second quarter of 2013, and is scheduled to be completed during the third quarter of the same year. When complete, Phase I will raise production capacity by an additional 10,000 metric tons per year of non-ionic surfactant. Phase II is scheduled to undergo construction beginning in the second quarter of 2015, and is expected to be complete during the third quarter. The Phase II stage will increase the production scale by 15,000 metric tons per year, and will raise the total production capacity of the facility to 40,000 metric tons of non-ionic surfactant per year.
