Areva and Iberdrola Win Maintenance Contract for Angra I and Angra II Nuclear Power Plants

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Brazil's government-controlled nuclear-power company Eletronuclear (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) has recently accepted bids for maintenance services for the 657-megawatt (MW) Angra I and 1,350-MW Angra II Nuclear Power Plants. Areva S.A. (EPA:CEI) (Paris, France) won six of these maintenance contracts, while the Spanish power company Iberdrola S.A. (MCE:IBE) (Bilbao, Spain) won one maintenance contract.

The contract between Areva and Eletronuclear is worth over $70 million and is expected to last three to five years. The contract consists of examination, refueling and major maintenance services on the reactors' electrical and mechanical components. Areva's engineers will stay as permanent staff at the site to carry out the maintenance and extensive works at both nuclear plants.

Since 2001, when Angra II became operational, Areva has been performing the plant's annual outage maintenance, and has been involved in two other projects with Eletronuclear: the construction of Angra III and the modernization of Angra I. In the latter, the French company was awarded the project's procurement of material and technical assistance. State-controlled Eletronuclear, a subsidiary of Eletrobras (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), was established in 1997 for the operation and construction of nuclear power plants in Brazil. Eletronuclear owns the nuclear complex Central Nuclear Almirante Alvaro Alberto that is formed by Angra I (657-MW) and Angra II (1,350-MW) and is planning to restart the construction of the third nuclear station Angra III (1,350 MW).
