Arkansas Electric Cooperative Preparing for Summer Peaking Load

Arkansas Electric Cooperative Corporation (AECC) (Little Rock, Arkansas) is attempting to meet summer 2007 peaking demand with 60 megawatts of natural gas-fired simple cycle combustion turbine/generator sets. A new power station will be constructed south of Elkins in Washington County, Arkansas, off Arkansas Highway 16 and Springston Ford Road, costing about $30 million.

The new station will have three 20-megawatt (MW) natural gas-fired GE TM2500s. The GE TM2500 is a trailer-mounted portable version of the LM 2500. The project is still in permitting, but equipment has been acquired and construction is scheduled to start March/April 2007 and will take about two months to complete. Operation is scheduled by June 1, 2007. AECC intends to construct the plant with its in-house personnel. Once complete, it will be run remotely and the day-to-day operation will be handled by the staff from the Thomas B. Fitzhugh Generating Station located in Ozark, Arkansas.
