Big Island Biodiesel Readies Hawaii Island Plant for Production

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Privately held Big Island Biodiesel LLC (Kahului, Hawaii), a subsidiary of Pacific Biodiesel Technologies LLC (Salem, Oregon), is preparing to begin biodiesel production by mid-July of this year at its plant in Keaau, Hawaii. The company is planning a grand opening ceremony for July 2 at the plant site, which is about eight miles south of Hilo on the Big Island.

The company began hiring employees for the plant, and production buildings, feedstock and storage, tanks and technical process equipment are completed. The plant will process the abundance of cooking and grease trap oils at the island's many hotels and restaurants and will have the flexibility of processing a range of animal fats and virgin crop oils.

The plant is expected to produce 5.5 million gallons per year of the renewable fuel, which will help meet the state's demand for biodiesel and be in compliance with ASTM D6751-07a fuel specs.

The Keaau plant will be the company's third production facility in the Pacific, following a small 1 million-gallon-per-year plant in Honolulu and the company's first refinery, which opened in 1996 and produces 750,000 gallons of biodiesel per year.

The company's process technology can also be found in facilities in Japan, Virginia, Oregon, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Texas, California and Alaska. In all, the company has had involvement in the production of more than 27 million gallons per year of biodiesel.
