Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Eletronuclear's 657-megawatt (MW) Angra I plant received its new steam generators on April 7, 2008, to replace Westinghouse generators that were manufactured in the 1980s. The new equipment will extend the plant's serviceable life by 20 years and enable it to reach a capacity of 700 MW, according to plant authorities.
In 2006, Angra I was forced to shut down its two units because of high vibrations that caused cracks in the steam generators. In addition, a corrosion problem related to the selection of materials deteriorated the tube sections.
Eletronuclear awarded Areva NP, Westinghouse and Nuclebras Equipamentos Pesados S.A. (Nuclep) the contract to modernize Angra I. Areva NP was responsible for procurement of material and technical assistance. Areva subcontracted Nuclep to manufacture the steam generators.
Westinghouse will be in charge of the installation and assembly of the equipment in January 2009.
Angra I is part of the nuclear complex Central Nuclear Almirante Alvaro Alberto (Angra dos Reis, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and has been operating since 1985. It is located in Angra dos Reis in Rio de Janeiro. The station is equipped with two 328.5 MW Westinghouse steam generators.
