Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Refap S.A. refinery (Canoas) in southeastern Brazil, owned by Petrobras (NYSE:PBR) (Rio de Janeiro) (70%) and Repsol YPF S.A. (NYSE:REP) (Madrid, Spain) (30%) is about to begin construction of a new gasoline hydrotreater. The unit addition is part of the environmental program to reduce sulfur contaminants in gasoline to 30 particles per million.
The new gasoline hydrotreater will have a capacity of 5,000 cubic meters per day, and contains an Axens (Rueil-Malmaison, France) low-pressure unit. The basic engineering has already been carried out. A consortium formed by Skanska AB (STO:SKAB) (Solna, Sweden) and Promon (Rio de Janeiro) has been awarded a $150 million contract to build the unit. For more details, view related March 19, 2008, news article - Skanska, Promon Consortium to Build HDS Unit at Brazil's Refap Refinery. The contract between Refap S.A. refinery and the consortium, which will be in charge of engineering, procurement and construction of the unit, was signed in March 2008. The contract also includes electromechanical installations and assistance with commissioning and startup. The construction startup is estimated to take place by the end of March 2009.
Refap S.A. also has two other projects that are part of the environmental program to reduce sulfur in petroleum products: the construction of the refinery's second diesel hydrotreater and the hydrogen unit to support it.
