Cape Verde's Cabeolica Inaugurates 9.35-Megawatt Wind Facility

Researched by Industrial Info Resources Latin America (Cordoba, Argentina)--Last Thursday, October 20, Cabeolica SA (Praia, Cape Verde), a private-public partnership between the government of Cape Verde, Electra SA (Mindelo, Cape Verde) and InfraCo Africa (London, England), inaugurated the first of four wind facilities on the Cape Verde archipelago.

At a total cost of $90 million, the project entails the construction of four windfarms located on the islands of Santiago, Sao Vicente, Sal and Boa Vista. The windfarms include a total of 30 Vestas wind turbines, each with a generating capacity of 850 kilowatts, making a total installed capacity of 25.5 megawatts.

The recently inaugurated facility is located on the southern part of Santiago Island and is equipped with 11 V52 Vestas turbines. The facilities on the Sao Vicente and Sal islands, which have seven and nine turbines, respectively, are expected to be operational in November. The final park, on Boa Vista Island, has 3 turbines and is still under construction. This facility is expected to be operational by the end of this year or early next year, depending on favorable wind conditions.

When fully operational, the four windfarms will allow the government to stabilize the price of energy, which is currently very dependent on the prices of imported fossil fuels that are required to generate electricity. Additionally, the facilities will enable the country to diversify its energy matrix, helping minimize blackouts and reduce emissions.
