China Huaneng's Nantong Power Plant Receives Approval for 2,000-Megawatt Expansion

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Phase III expansion of China Huaneng Group's (Beijing) Nantong power plant received final approval from the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) on September 29.

According to the approval, the project will be jointly invested (50:50) by Huaneng Power International Limited (SHA:600011) (Beijing) and Nantong Tianshenggang Power Generation Company Limited (Nantong, Jiangsu), which is a subsidiary of China Guodian Corporation (Beijing). Both the Huaneng Nantong power plant and the Nantong Tianshenggang power plant are located in Tianshenggang Town of Nantong city, in eastern China's Jiangsu province. Previously, both power plants had planned to build two 1,000-megawatt (MW) ultra-supercritical coal-fired units. Through the coordination of the NDRC, a joint venture was established. The site at the former Tianshenggang power plant was then cancelled.

The Nantong power plant was initially built in 1990. Two 350-MW units built in Phase I were completed in March 2009 and the two 350-MW built in Phase II were completed in July 1999. With the construction of the two 1,000-MW units, the total installed capacity of the power plant will be expanded to 3,400 MW.

As support for the two 1,000-MW units, a 50,000-ton coal-unloading port and a 4,000-ton coal loading berth will be built. Both units will be furnished with high-efficiency electrostatic dust-removal devices, flue gas desulfuration devices, denitration devices and online continuous monitoring devices. Total investment in the project will be about $1.2 billion. Presently, East China Electric Power Design Institute (Shanghai), a regional subsidiary of China Power Engineering Consulting Corporation (Beijing), is carrying out preliminary engineering for the project. Construction of the project is expected to kick off officially in December this year. According to the schedule, both units of the project will be put into operation by the end of 2012.
