China's Total Installed Capacity to Surpass 800 GW in 2008

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--By the end of the year, the total installed capacity of power plants in China is expected to surpass 800 gigawatts (GW), and the capacity could reached 1,000 GW in 2010, said Zhang Guobao, director of the State energy Bureau of China at the China Hydropower Development Forum held on May 8, 2008, in Beijing.

Zhang Guobao also said that there are about 190 GW of power projects currently under construction in China. Except for some hydropower projects, most of the other projects under construction will begin operation in two to three years.

Based on related statistics, construction for electric power has been growing quickly in order to adapt to demands of social and economic development. In the past five years, the total installed capacity of power in China surpassed 400 GW, 500 GW, 600 GW and 700 GW each year. The gross installed capacity has been ranked the second in world, just after the United States, for over a decade.

However, Zhang Guobao also warned that problems, such as improper power-source structure and high consumption of resources, in the industry remain serious despite the fast growth in installed capacity. Among the total installed capacity at present, the percentage of coal-fired thermal power is as high as about 75%.
