Construction on Combined-Cycle Natural-Gas-Fired Power Station Set to Begin in Portugal

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--International Power plc (London) and Endesa S.A.(Madrid, Spain) have formed a joint-venture partnership for the construction of an 830-megawatt (MW) grassroot natural-gas-fired combined-cycle power station to be located in Abrantes, Portugal, northeast of Lisbon near the existing Tejo coal-fired power plant. The $880 million project's turnkey engineering, procurement and construction contract has been signed with Siemens S.A. (Amadora, Portugal). Construction on the power station is set to begin in the second quarter of 2008 with completion and commissioning scheduled for the second quarter of 2011.

The turnkey contract calls for the construction of two 415 MW blocks that will feature two 287 MW Siemens (SGT5-400F) gas turbine generator sets with fully developed compressors. It will also be fitted with two heat recovery steam generators driving two 128 MW steam turbine generators in combined-cycle mode with a targeted efficiency rating of more than 58% and two hydrogen-cooled generators. The station will have the most advanced instrumentation and controls, mechanical and electrical equipment in today's power-generation market.

The new power station will be able to benefit from shared services, such as cooling water infrastructure, as it will be very close to the existing Tejo plant. The plant will be jointly owned 50-50 by International Power plc and Endesa S.A.

Industrial Info will continue to monitor this project as it goes through its various stages of construction and development.
