Construction this Fall on $25 Million Scrubber Upgrade at Pennsylvania Coal Plant

Preparation is underway for construction that will start this fall on the 914-megawatt Unit #1 scrubber (flue gas desulfurization, or FGD) system upgrade at First Energy Corporation's (Akron, Ohio) Bruce Mansfield Power Station. Project completion is scheduled for June 2006.

The coal-fired power plant, located in Shippingport, Beaver County, Pennsylvania, includes three 914-megawatt units with three General Electric tandem-compound turbine/generator sets, and three Foster Wheeler opposed-fired dry bottom boilers. Commercial operation on the three units started between 1976 and 1980.

Units 1 and 2 already have Low NOx burners, overfired-air, and wet scrubbers. The scrubbers will be upgraded by redesigning equipment to further reduce sulfur oxide (SO2) emissions and improve operating performance. The Unit #2 upgrade will follow in the fall of 2006. Unit #3 has a wet electrostatic precipitator (ESP) and is also scheduled for an upgrade in 2007.

The facility is owned and operated by Pennsylvania Power Company, a subsidiary of First Energy Corporation.

Ohio Edison Company (Shadyside, Ohio), another First Energy subsidiary, also has plans to install new pollution controls, such as Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) units, at its W H Sammis North Power Station, Stratton, Ohio, and scrubber at its Sammis South Power Station, also in Stratton, Ohio.
