Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Construction is under way for a $370 million grassroot intermodal terminal planned in Joliet, Illinois, for Union Pacific Corporation (NYSE:UNP) (Omaha, Nebraska).

Plans are to construct a new intermodal terminal on a 785-acre site that would enable the company to handle 500,000 ocean-going containers per year. The new terminal will include four loading tracks, each approximately 8,000 feet long; six 8,000-foot tracks to stage railcars for loading; six track-classification yards; 10 lane-next-generation automated gate systems; 15 miles of rail track; cranes; storage facilities and other supporting equipment. Structural erections and construction started in September, and overall completion has been fast-tracked to June 2010. The new terminal will be part of a logistics park covering more than 6 square miles and is part of the 3,900-acre Centerpoint Intermodal Center, which is a redevelopment of the former Joliet Arsenal. The Joliet facility will have 400 acres of space for container and trailer storage and 625 acres for environmental purposes.

Ragnar Benson Incorporated (Park Ridge, Illinois) was selected to provide general construction services for the new intermodal terminal. Centerpoint Properties (Oakbrook, Illinois) was selected as the developer for the new center.
