Dairyland Power Cooperative Upgrading Control Systems at Alma Power Station

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Dairyland Power Cooperative (La Crosse, Wisconsin) is currently halfway complete with upgrades on some of the control systems at the Alma Power Station located off of Old Highway 35 outside of Alma, Wisconsin. The two largest units at the 186-megawatt (MW) coal-fired facility were due to have the digital control system (DCS) replaced and environmental controls installed on the two boilers to help with emissions reduction. The 82-MW Unit 5, the station's largest operational unit, was first to go offline for an upgrade. The 54-MW Unit 4 is expected to go offline for its upgrade in February.

Novaspect (Elk Grove Village, Illinois) has been contracted to install the new Emerson Delta V DCS system on the unit's boiler and turbine systems. Moorehead Machinery & Boiler (Minneapolis, Minnesota) was contracted to install the over-fired air and low NOx burner systems supplied by Advanced Combustion Technologies (Hooksett, New Hampshire). The outage is expected last for the next couple of weeks. The cooperative said it upgraded some parts of the control systems on the remaining three 15-MW units about five years ago.

Dairyland, a Touchstone Energy cooperative, has approximately 25 members. It serves 500,000 customers, and generates, transmits and distributes more than 1,100 MW of electricity through its fleet of fossil-fuel-fired and renewable-energy assets. Dairyland also owns 50% of the 583-MW coal-fired Unit 4 at the Weston Power Station in Rothschild, Wisconsin, which became operational in June.
