Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Hidrotoapi S.A. (Quito, Ecuador) is preparing tenders to be launched between October and November for a 246-megawatt (MW) hydro power project in the Toachi and Pilaton rivers in the Pichincha province of Ecuador.
The Toachi-Pilaton project has a total planned power output of 246 MW and will consist of the construction of two power houses; a 60-meter concrete dam; and two penstocks, one 4.5 kilometers (km) long and the other 10 km long.
The final technical design is under way. The project, which was initially designed to produce 226 MW, has boosted its power capacity by 20 MW. The smaller of the two power houses, named Sarapullo, will keep its planned 48-MW design capacity, while the bigger, Arulliquin, now will produce 198 MW.
The power houses each were to be equipped with two Francis turbines. However, due to several changes on the configuration, the number of turbines still needs to be confirmed in the following days, as plant officials told Industrial Info.
Biddings for a turnkey contract are scheduled for October or November, and the contract is expected to be signed by January. Construction kickoff is planned for February, and it is expected to last about 48 months, with commission of the new facilities by February 2014.
Hidrotoapi SA is dedicated to the design, construction, operation and Maintenance of Hydro Power Plants since 2005 and is in charge of the administration of the Toachi-Pilaton Project. The project is part of Ecuador´s objective to have about 80% of its electricity generated by renewable sources by 2020.
