Electricite de France Demolishes Jarry Sud Power Plant Plans New Diesel-Fired Plant on Guadeloupe in Eastern Caribbean Sea

The 100-megawatt (MW) Jarry Sud thermoelectric power plant provided Guadeloupe's peak demand and was equipped with three General Electric combustion turbines operational since 1982 and one 40 MW unit (No. 5), which became operational in 2005. Unit 1, which was introduced in 1982, was decommissioned in 2007.

According to officials, EDF Guadeloupe will build a 160 MW diesel- fired power plant to be equipped with eight 20 MW internal combustion engines. The bidding process for a turnkey contract is expected to begin next July 2008 and thus construction kick-off in September 2009, with a of 2- year construction period.

EDF´s decision to invest in the renewal of Guadeloupe's production park is related to an increase in electricity demand on the Island, together with the necessity to reduce polluting carbon dioxide and sulfur emissions from fossil fuel electricity production, to comply with European legislation.

After a local dispute that confronted local unions and authorities with EDF, demolition work finally got underway. The controversy had started after the bidding process when awarded French company subcontracted a foreign company in detriment of a local one.
