Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--E.ON Benelux, a part of E.ON AG (OTC:EONGY) (Dusseldorf, Germany), was forced to temporarily halt the construction of a coal-and-biomass-fired power plant on the Maasvlakte harbor in Rotterdam, Netherlands. E.ON had begun groundwork, assuming that only a license was required for the operation stage. Construction work will be halted to prevent interference with neighboring company Lyondell. Preliminary works for the plant will be reduced until a license is granted. According to an E.ON Benelux news release, the company could receive a final decision by the end of the month.
Following Greenpeace's request, a decision was passed to the provinces of South Holland and Zeeland to enforce compliance in relation to construction activities conducted by E.ON.
The $1.8 billion plant, named MPP3, will be a modern coal-fired power station using pulverized coal to produce steam at high conditions (285 bar, 600 to 620 degrees Celcius). This steam is converted into electricity using a turbine and a generator. There is an approximate 20% drop in CO2-emissions per kilowatt-hour. The plant has a net capacity of 1,070 megawatts (MW), serving 7% of the domestic electricity capacity.
E.ON Benelux owns power plants with a total capacity of 1,850 MW and focuses on the production and supply of electricity and gas in the Netherlands and Belgium.
