Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The 299,000-barrel-per-day (BBL/d) MiRO refinery in Karlsruhe, Germany, is finalizing details for an upcoming turnaround, scheduled to begin February 6. The complex is owned and operated by Mineralöl Raffinerie Oberrhein GmbH (Karlsruhe). The company is a joint venture of ConocoPhillips Continental Holding GmbH (Hamburg, Germany) (18.75%), Shell Deutschland Oil GmbH (Hamburg) (32.25%), Esso Deutschland GmbH (Würzburg, Germany) (25%) and Rühr Oel GmbH (Bochum, Germany) (24%), which is a 50:50 joint venture of BP plc (NYSE:BP) (London, England) and PDVSA (Caracas, Venezuela).
The partial turnaround will affect two of the five production areas at the refinery: Zone 1 and Zone 2. Units such as the 65,000-BBL/d Topping 1 unit, the 134,100-BBL/d Topping 2 unit, and the 91,100-BBL/d fluid catalytic cracking unit will undergo maintenance and are expected to be offline for 58 non-production days.
The MiRO refinery is a fully integrated plant with a high capacity to convert lower-cost feedstocks into high-value products, primarily with via the fluid catalytic cracker and delayed coker. The refinery's primary products are gasoline, diesel fuel, middle distillates and specialty products, along with a small amount of residual fuel oil. The current production site consists of two production sites, which were previously two independent refineries: the Upper Rhine Oil Refinery Limited (owned by OMW) and the Esso Refinery Karlsruhe (owned by OMW and Esso AG). On October 1, 1996, the two refineries merged into the MiRO refinery.
