Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Jacobs Engineering Group Incorporated (NYSE:JEC) (Pasadena, California) has secured a contract from airport operator BAA plc (London, United Kingdom) to provide a full range of engineering design services for the upcoming Energy Center and allied distribution systems at London's Heathrow Airport. The value of the contract has yet to be disclosed.
The proposed Energy Center is being set up as part of the upcoming Heathrow East Terminal, a new passenger terminal in the central terminal area. The Energy Center will be located in one of the airport's car parks and will cover an area of 1,200 square meters. The facility will consist of a combined cooling, heating and power generation (CCHP) facility, as well as biomass boilers. The CCHP unit will generate power for air-conditioning equipment at the new terminal and will also facilitate the recovery of heat, which will be supplied to heating systems. The center will operate on a combination of renewable and conventional feedstock for power generation.
Under the contract, Jacobs Engineering will be responsible for providing expertise in renewable fuels and power technology, building design, and the development of a multi-function infrastructure. The firm will also profile onsite energy demand, undertake performance modeling of technology, assess the commercial, environmental and maintenance options for the lifespan of the facility, and develop an appropriate scheme design.
Development of the Heathrow East Terminal is part of a $7.91 billion investment plan to upgrade Heathrow. About $1.65 billion of this will be invested to demolish Terminal 1 and refurbish Terminal 2 in order to increase annual passenger capacity. The existing facilities will be shut down at the end of 2009, and the new building will commence operations in 2013. The new terminal will be developed over an area of 180,000 square meters. The annual passenger capacity of the new terminal will be increased to 20 million travelers by 2013, when the first phase of development is scheduled for completion. In the second phase, the new Heathrow East Terminal will extend into the site of the existing Terminal 1. This is scheduled for completion by 2019, and the annual passenger capacity of the new terminal will increase to 30 million travelers. The new terminal will be used for the operations of Star Alliance Services GmBH (Frankfurt, Germany).
The Heathrow East Terminal will be a "green" building, fitted with solar panels on its rooftop. The roof will have large windows, reducing the need for artificial lighting. The solar power facility and the Energy Center will reduce carbon emissions from Terminal 2 an estimated 40%.
