Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Johnson Controls Incorporated (NYSE:JCI) (JCI) (Milwaukee, Wisconsin) has selected Carlisle Associates (Columbia, South Carolina) to provide architectural and engineering services for a planned $100 million grassroot automotive battery-recycling center and secondary lead plant in Florence, South Carolina.
Plans are to construct a 200,000-square-foot building on 36 acres of a 270-acre site that will provide closed-loop, automotive battery recycling. Designs and permitting are currently under way. JCI received final permits for the new facility in April of this year. A general contractor is anticipated to be selected by this fall. Construction is anticipated to begin in the spring of 2011, with overall completion slated for the summer of 2012. Approximately 250 new jobs will be created. JCI is also building another facility in Garcia, Mexico.
Johnson Controls Incorporated manufactures car batteries and interior parts (seating, instrument panels and electronics) for passenger and hybrid electric vehicles, as well as energy-efficient HVAC systems for commercial buildings. JCI's OEM customers include General Motors, Daimler, Chrysler, and Ford (NYSE:F). JCI makes car batteries for retailers such as AutoZone (NYSE:AZO), Advance Auto Parts (NYSE:AAP), Pep Boys (NYSE:PBY) and Wal-Mart (NYSE:WMT). As of 2009, the company had 130,000 employees.
