Smith Power Station in Trapp, Kentucky, is preparing to install two additional dual-fueled (gas- and oil-fired), simple-cycle General Electric (NYSE:GE) (Fairfield, Connecticut) LMS100 units. Each will produce approximately 100 megawatts (MW). Some of the underground work has been awarded, and most of the underground electrical and duct work is well under way.
The J.K. Smith Power Station consists of seven combustion turbines. The plant is owned by East Kentucky Power Cooperative. The cooperative plans to expand the plant by installing a 278-MW coal-fired unit, subject to regulatory approval.
