Kentucky Power Plant Adding Two 100-Megawatt Peaking Units

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The J.K. Smith Power Station in Trapp, Kentucky, is preparing to install two additional dual-fueled (gas- and oil-fired), simple-cycle General Electric (NYSE:GE) (Fairfield, Connecticut) LMS100 units. Each will produce approximately 100 megawatts (MW). Some of the underground work has been awarded, and most of the underground electrical and duct work is well under way.

Bids for the above-ground work, including the foundation and the installation of combustion turbines, are expected to be sent out before the end of the month. A short list of contractors will be determined and awarded around the first quarter of 2009. This phase of above-ground construction is anticipated to start in the latter part of the first quarter of 2009.

The J.K. Smith Power Station consists of seven combustion turbines. The plant is owned by East Kentucky Power Cooperative. The cooperative plans to expand the plant by installing a 278-MW coal-fired unit, subject to regulatory approval.
