Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas--Lubrizol Corporation (NYSE:LZ) (Wickliffe, Ohio) is only a few months from beginning construction on several major investments that will create growth opportunities in multiple regions worldwide. Several years ago, Lubrizol began planning a new plant in China, and earlier this year the company announced those plans were closer to reality. In North America, Lubrizol plans to construct a unit to expand production of its Carbopol polymer product at a plant in Calvert City, Kentucky.
Civil construction is expected to begin during the fourth quarter for the new $100 million addition in the Zhuhai Gaolan Port Economic Zone. Upon the completion of the first phase of this new plant in late 2011, plans are already in place to expand the site potentially doubling its size or more. The Zhuhia region provides Lubrizol with access to transportation systems for delivering product to major hubs and ports in the Asian region.
In Kentucky, Lubrizol plans to begin construction early next year for the new Carbopol unit, which will produce the company's line of polyacrylate polymers, which are used as a modifier in personal care products. Chemstress Consultants Company (Akron, Ohio) is providing turnkey engineering and construction services for this estimated $40 million project. Lubrizol owns and operates another plant in Louisville, Kentucky, that produces specialty chemicals. Plans for expansions and upgrades at this site are in the works. CFW Associated Engineers Incorporated (Louisville) has been selected as contractor for a utility project at the plant that will include integrating some assets from a neighboring acquisition. Plans to expand production of the company's Vycar product at the site are in the early phases of design, with expectations that construction could begin next year.
Even in the midst of aggressive growth plans, Lubrizol has been forced to reorganize some of its business in response to challenging economics. Lubrizol plans to sell or close its oil additives plant in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Plans to sell this asset have been in the works for nearly two years.
