Maoming Petrochemical Completes China’s Largest Low Density Polyethylene Unit

China’s largest, most technologically advanced low-density polyethylene unit, with an annual capacity of 250,000 tons, was completed by Maoming Petrochemical Corporation, a subsidiary of SINOPEC Group (Beijing, China) in Guangdong Province on February 28, 2007.

The total investment for the unit was over $180 million. This is in addition to Maoming Petrochemical’s 1 million ton per year polyethylene upgrading project.

The new unit uses Lupotech TS high-pressure (250-310MPa) technology from Basell (Hoofddorp, Netherlands). The plant will produce high transparent sheets, shrink-wrap, power cable materials and foam plastic. Presently, over 50% of low-density polyethylene in China is imported.

The completion of this 250,000 ton unit in Maoming will bring the polyethylene products in China up one level and meet the market demands for higher quality plastics. The unit under discussion is the most cutting-edge in technology among the four units that make up the 1 million ton upgrading project. It uses the largest number of imported parts and equipment and is the most demanding in construction/installation quality.

The construction/installation of this unit started in April 2006 and was completed in February 2007. It made the record as the nation’s fastest construction/installation of a unit of this capacity.

Last July, Maoming Petrochemical completed construction of a $300 million, 350,000 metric ton per year high density polyethylene (HDPE) plant at the site. Both of these projects were initially reported by Industrial Info in 2004, as part of the International Industrial Database .
