Mexichem Colombia S.A. (Cartagena, Colombia) operates the only PVC plant that Grupo Mexichem owns in Colombia, which has three processing units. Two of the units produce emulsions, and the third produces suspension PVC. The site has a combined capacity of 400,000 metric tons per year, which represents more than 50% of the total production of 750,000 metric tons per year at this site and the other two in Altamira y Tlaxcala, Mexico.
Mexichem has decided to expand the production capacity in the Cartagena plant to include the suspensión PVC unit and the Emulsion 1 unit.
Considered the major PVC producer in Latinamerica, Mexichem is completing the bidding process to kick off the 15% expansion of the PVC suspension unit before the end of this present year, in order to complete it by May 2013.
Mexichem has decided to perform the expansion of the Emulsion 1 unit in two phases. The first phase aims to expand the production capacity 15%. This capacity expansion will take 12 months to be completed, and construction is to begin in June 2013. The second phase is expected to be implemented between January 2015 and January 2016; however, they still need to determine the capacity the unit will have when this second stage is completed.
