Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). MGE Power West Campus LLC a subsidiary of MGE Energy Incorporated (NYSE: MGEE) (Madison, Wisconsin) has started construction (Plant 1053152, PEC 19000942) of the $180 million West Campus Cogeneration project located at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW-Madison) campus in Dane County.

MGE and UW-Madison will jointly own the facility with MGE providing operations and maintenance. Excavation work for the new cogen began in Mid-October and the facility's foundation will be constructed this winter. The cogen is expected to begin commercial operation in the summer of 2005 and will supply 150 megawatts (MW) of peak power to MGE customers while providing 500,000 pounds per hour of process steam and 20,000 tons of chilled water for air conditioning at the UW campus.

The combined-cycle power island will consist of two natural gas-fired 47.5MW GE Power Systems LM6000PC, SPRINT combustion turbine generators that will be equipped with Gas Turbine Inlet Cooling (GTIC) chiller systems. The power island will also include two Deltak heat recovery steam generators (HRSG) equipped with duct burners and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) sections. The hot exhaust gases coming from the combustion turbine generators will be directed through the HRSG's to a 55MW GE Power System condensing steam turbine generator. A single 2MW diesel engine will also be added for the cogen's peak usage (during the summer & winter months).
