Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--After a power system stabilizer test was conducted on all units at the Huaneng Manwan hydropower plant in May 2008, the excitation system reformation, which called for five 250-megawatt (MW) hydraulic-turbine-generating units, was completed. The Nanjing Automation Research Institute (NARI Group) (Jiangsu, China), a subsidiary of the State Grid Corporation of China (Beijing), carried out the test.
The plant is one of the main power plants in China's Yunnan province. Built in the 1990s, and now a subsidiary of Yunnan Huaneng Lancang River Hydropower Company (Hydro Lancang) (Kunming, China), the company is responsible for hydropower development in the Yunnan section of the Lancang River. The power plant was initially developed along with the first generation of SJ800 excitation systems created by NARI Electric Control Company, which comprises one SJ800 excitation regulator cubicle, three silicon controlled rectifier cubicles, one excitation operation cubicle, one auxiliary cubicle, one protection cubicle and one field circuit breaker cubicle. After more than a decade of stable operation, the plant's excitation system needed to be updated. In order to further improve the performance of the excitation system, Hydro Lancang decided to use the NARI Group's new NES5100 excitation system to upgrade Unit 5.
The NES5100 excitation system inherited its core technology from the two previous systems: the SJ800 and the SAVR2000. By using the latest mathematic models of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the latest research results and processes in the digital control sector, the NES5100 excitation system improved its computation speed, control cycle, anti-electromagnetic interference and reliability.
The performance of the excitation system on Unit 5 after reformation convinced Hydro Lancang to continue the excitation system reformation for the remaining four units. The continued success of the five sets of NES5100 excitation systems at the Manwan power plant further enhanced the partnership between the NARI Group and Hydro Lancang. The NARI Group has won an excitation system supply control contract for a large batch of new power plants under construction in the Lancang River valley area. Lancang River has a total length of 1,240 kilometers in Yunnan province. There are 14 power stations with a total planned capacity of 25,000 MW in the Yunnan section of the Lancang River.
