Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Consorcio Eolico Amayo S.A. (Quito, Ecuador), a consortium formed by Energia Eolica de Nicaragua (Managua, Nicaragua), Centrans Energy Services Incorporated (Guatemala, Guatemala) and Arctas Capital Group (Houston, Texas), will build a windfarm at Cocibolca Lake in Nicaragua's Rivas Department.
The 39.9-megawatt (MW) windfarm will have 19 Suzlon aero generators, manufactured in Denmark. The windfarm will be connected to the National Interconnected System (SIC), which goes from Costa Rica to Honduras, and the Spanish firm Union Fenosa will be responsible for the distribution.
The 80-meter towers have already been shipped to Nicaragua's main port, Corinto, and the blades are expected arrive soon. Project manager Sean Porter revealed to Industrial Info that the windfarm could be operational by September.
The Central American Bank for Economic Integration approved $71 million in financing for the $95 million project. The remaining balance will be financed by the consortium.
The Amayo windfarm will be the first windfarm to be built in Nicaragua and one of the largest in Central America, which only has windfarms in Costa Rica and Cuba. Nicaragua had been focusing on geothermal energy and not in wind or solar. The plant will help to mitigate the 20% energetic deficit that Nicaragua is currently facing, generating approximately 400 MW with a low 500 MW power demand.
