Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), India's largest power generation company, is planning to set up a thermal power project in Chhattisgarh and three in Madhya Pradesh for a total installed capacity of 6,060 megawatts (MW), with an investment of $5.3 billion.
Drawn-out land acquisition processes have been completed for the 1,600-MW Lara super-thermal project in Raigarh, which could be operational sometime in 2014.
The three thermal plants, each with a capacity of 1,320 MW, are in Barethi, Madhya Pradesh, Gadarwara and Khargone. The coal consumption for all the planned NTPC plants would be about 30 million tons annually.
The allotment process for coal blocks to supply the plants is ongoing. A NTPC spokesman said that on average, a 1,000-MW power station requires 1 million cubic feet per second (cusecs). The water consumption for the four projects will be 150 million cubic meters annually. Water supply sources for all four power stations have been identified.
Currently, the NTPC's western region is operating three super-thermal power stations in Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh, with a total capacity of 9,340 MW. The Sipat super-thermal (2,980 MW) and the Korba plant (2,600 MW) contribute more than 30% of Chhattisgarh's power requirements.
The Vindhyachal power station in the Sidhi district, with a capacity of 3,760 MW, supplies 33.75% of Madhya Pradesh's needs. NTPC is planning to add 14,038 MW of capacity in the next five years for a total capacity of 51,000 MW by 2017. The company's long-term plan is to have 128,000 MW of installed capacity by 2032.
