Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The long-disputed, 35-megawatt (MW) Springfield Biomass Facility in Springfield, Massachusetts, remains on hold indefinitely. Palmer Renewable Energy (Canton, Massachusetts), the developer of the proposed $150 million renewable energy project, filed suit against the City of Springfield and the Zoning Board of Appeals in 2011. Palmer Renewable was issued an air quality permit from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, but the Springfield City Council had revoked a building permit.
Palmer Renewable Energy wants to build a biomass plant near Palmer Paving Company on Page Boulevard in Hampden County, Massachusetts. The power plant would use 900 tons per day of wood chips and construction debris to generate electricity.
The plant would emit carbon dioxide and particulate matter at a higher rate than a coal plant, adding tons of air pollution to the city.
The project has been under development since 2009. Palmer Renewable Energy still does not have a power-purchase agreement and no contractor has been selected.
