Researched by Industrial Info Resources Australia (Perth, Australia)--Alinta Cogeneration Pty Limited (Perth, Australia) is preparing for a scheduled maintenance outage on the 280-megawatt (MW) Alcoa Cogeneration Plant in Pinjarra. The plant, located at Alcoa's Pinjarra refinery in Western Australia, produces electricity, which is supplied to the grid, and steam, which is supplied to Alcoa for use in its refinery. The base-load station is owned by Alinta Energy Limited (Sydney, Australia) and operated by Alinta Cogeneration Pty Limited.
The power plant has two generating units equipped with two 140-MW, heavy-frame Mitsubishi combustion turbines and Mitsubishi generators, with a total generating capacity of 285 MW. Waste heat generated from the gas turbine is captured by two NEM Group heat recovery steam generators with duct burners attached.
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (Tokyo, Japan), the equipment manufacturer, conducts maintenance on the gas turbines and generator each year, while Fluor Australia Pty Limited (Perth, Australia), as project manager, handles operations and maintenance. Fluor Australia is a subsidiary of Fluor Corporation (NYSE:FLR) (Irving, Texas).
A major overhaul is scheduled for the 140-MW Unit 1 combustion turbine and generator during third-quarter 2014. The inspections should take 28 days, during which maintenance, repairs and inspection will be performed on the turbine's equipment, along with generator tests and cleaning.
An annual routine combustion inspection also is scheduled for the Unit 2 combustion turbine in October 2014. A 14-day outage also is planned for late 2014. Alinta operates three power plants across Alcoa Region, including the 380-MW Wagerup Power Station, the 178-MW Newman gas-fired power station and the 210-MW Port Hedland Power Station in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The company's generation portfolio includes four power plants across Australia and a 112-MW Glenbrook Power Station in New Zealand.
