Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Developers are proposing more than 3,000 megawatts (MW) of new generation in West Virginia. If these projects are constructed, the state's generation capacity could increase by more than 17.8%, bringing its capacity up from about 17,000 MW to about 20,000 MW. New planned generation unit additions will use varied fuel sources, including conventional coal, gasified coal, hydroelectric, natural-gas-fired and wind units.
Coal generation leads the planned generation (63.4%) with plans for two independent power producers building 1,295 MW of conventional coal-fired units, a 560 MW coal integrated gasification combined-cycle (IGCC) planned by Appalachian Power Company (Roanoke, Virginia), a subsidiary of American Electric Power Company (NYSE:AEP) (Columbus Ohio), and a 90 MW waste coal-fired plant.
Renewable energy projects follow coal with 35.6% of the new generation. Wind power developers are looking at a possible addition of 925 MW, increasing its total capacity to almost 1,000 MW for the state. Hydroelectric power may make a big jump with the 52.5% increase from the current 291 MW to 443 MW.
