Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The preliminary feasibility study report prepared by HydroChina Chengdu Engineering Corporation (Chengdu, Sichuan) for the Mengdigou Hydropower Station recently passed an examination by an expert panel that was jointly organized under the Water Resources and Hydropower Planning and Design General Institute and the Development and Reform Commission of Sichuan Province.
The Mengdigou Hydropower Station is the fifth step of the seven-step cascade development scheme proposed for the middle reaches of the Yalong River. The station will connect to the proposed 2,718-megawatt (MW) Lenggu Hydropower Station and the proposed 1,500-MW Yangfanggou Hydropower Station in its upstream and downstream components, respectively. Its dam site is at the boundary between Jiulong County of the Garze prefecture and Muli County of the Liangshan prefecture on the mainstream of the Yalong River. Its reservoir area involves Jiulong, Kangding, Yajiang and Muli, which are four counties west of the Sichuan province.
Early in 2008, under the mandate of project owner Ertan Hydropower Development Company Limited (Chengdu, Sichuan), HydroChina Chengdu started to build about 70 kilometers of access roads for survey and investigation, which were completed at the end of 2009.
Site investigation for the preliminary feasibility study kicked off at the beginning of 2010. During nearly two years of efforts, HydroChina Chengdu built about 30 kilometers of survey paths at the site, and completed the drilling of 36 exploring holes with a total length of 5,500 meters and 28 survey audits with a total length of 4,420 meters. In May 2011, the draft version report for dam site selection was prepared, and expert input was accepted. The preparation for the preliminary feasibility study report was completed in December 2011.
According to the report, the project will be built with a 206-meter-high, double curvature concrete dam with a normal pool level of 2,254 meters above sea level to support a 2,200-MW powerhouse. The major purpose of the project will be power generation, with other diversified benefits in navigation.
