Qatar and Syria Agree to Build Natural Gas-Fired Stations in Syria

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--In April, Qatar Electricity & Water Company (QEWC) (Doha, Qatar) and Syrian Qatari Holding (Damascus, Syria) signed a principles of agreement contract to jointly finance, develop and construct two natural gas-fired, combined-cycle power stations in Syria. The majority of QEWC, or 57.26%, is owned by companies and individuals; the remaining 42.74% is owned by the government. Syrian Qatari Holding, though based in Syria, is equally owned by the governments of Syria and Qatar.

One station will be in Sweidieh, near the oil fields of northeastern Syria, at the Al Hasakah Industrial Zone; the second will be constructed near Adra, which is 25 kilometers north of Damascus. Construction of both stations is scheduled to commence in the next second quarter and is expected to be completed in 2013. Natural gas will be provided by the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, through a Fuel Supply Agreement.

Both natural gas-fired, combined-cycle power stations are being planned and designed with the same specifications to produce environmentally friendly power. The partners plan to construct two natural gas-fired, combined-cycle power stations utilizing two combustion turbine generator sets. These will be coupled with heat-recovery steam generators to drive a steam turbine generator. Once commissioned, each station will produce 450 megawatts; both will be fitted with ancillary equipment to supply power for the local Syrian grids.
