Site Studies Underway in the Coastal Chinese City of Xiamen for Three Windfarms

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas) -- Xiamen, one of the largest coastal cities in Southeast China’s Fujian Province, plans to build three windfarms with a total expected installed capacity of 149 megawatts (MW), according to planning announced by the Weather Administration of Xiamen City.

Based on the preliminary site selection scheme, these three windfarms are Xiamen Neicuo Windfarm, with a planned installed capacity of 9 MW; Xiang’an Lianhe Windfarm, with a planned installed capacity of 40 MW; and Dayudao Offshore Windfarm, with a planned installed capacity of 100 MW. Xiamen City is currently carrying out consultation on the site planning of these windfarms, and to conduct further feasibility study on these sites together with the overall urban planning as well as the tourism development planning.

Early in March of this year, the construction of windfarms was initially proposed in the Suggestions Regarding the Development of Renewable Energies in Xiamen submitted by the Education, Science and Culture Commission of the People’s Politics Consulting Conference of Xiamen City. A working team comprised of the Development and Reform Commission, the Science and Technology Bureau and the Weather Administration of Xiamen City was established to carry out the pre-stage preparations later on.

A wind resource monitoring network, including the setup of a batch of automatic wind power observation stations is currently under construction in Xiamen City. Together with two existing automatic wind power observation stations, a reasonable layout on the investigation of wind resources and gradient wind observation records is being established in Xiamen City. These observation stations could collect data regarding the wind power resources in the space 10~70 meters above ground.

Based on the preliminary analysis of the working team, Xiamen is rich in wind resources with a huge value for development. Wind power density at the coastal area is 170 watts per square meter, and the area with high effective wind speed is concentrated, which is adequate for the construction of windfarms.
