Researched by Industrial Info Resources India (Delhi, India)--Leading Indian wind turbine-maker Suzlon Energy Limited (BSE:532667) (SEL) (Pune, India) has commissioned Indian Oil Corporation Limited's (BSE:530965) (IOCL) (New Delhi, India) 48.3-megawatt (MW) windfarm, located at Vajrakarur in the Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh. Powered by Suzlon S-88 turbines, the windfarm has a total of 23 wind-turbine generator (WTG) sets of 2.1 MW apiece.
The S-88 wind turbines are suitable for medium-speed wind zones. These turbines can withstand extreme conditions and can operate effectively with lower maintenance costs. In August 2011, Suzlon bagged the contract to set up, operate and maintain the windfarm. This is the second WTG order delivered by Suzlon to IOCL. The corporation's maiden wind power project, located in the Kutch district of Gujarat, was also built by Suzlon. Comprising wind turbine generators with rated capacities of 1,500 kilowatts each, the 21-MW windfarm was brought online in January 2009.
The Suzlon Group is ranked as the world's fifth-largest wind turbine supplier in cumulative installed capacity. The company's global spread extends across Asia, Australia, Europe, Africa, and North and South America, with more than 17,000 MW of wind energy capacity installed in 28 countries, and operations across 32 countries with revenues of approximately $4 billion.
The Suzlon Group offers product portfolios, ranging from sub-megawatt on-shore turbines at 600 kilowatts (kW), to the world's largest commercial 6.15-MW offshore turbines. The group comprises Suzlon Energy Limited and its subsidiaries, including REpower Systems SE (Hamburg, Germany), in which the company currently holds an approximately 95% share.
IOCL is India's flagship national oil company, with business interests encompassing the entire hydrocarbon value chain--from refining, pipeline transportation and the marketing of petroleum products, to the exploration and production of crude oil and gas and the marketing of natural gas and petrochemicals. IOCL has also forayed into alternative energy options, such as wind, solar, biofuels and nuclear power.
