Tama Ethanol Preparing to Start Construction on Iowa Plant

The company held an official groundbreaking ceremony late last year with about 80 attendees that included Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and Congressman Leonard Boswell (D-Iowa) to mark the milestone and to let investors know the project is moving into the next phase of development.

Earthwork and dirt turning are expected to get underway at the site, located off Highway E 49 in Tama, in about 60 to 90 days. The company has retained AGRA Industries Incorporated (Merrill, Wisconsin) as their turn-key engineering, procurement, construction (E+P+C) contractor and the company expects to begin mobilizing some of the 300 laborers it will take to build the plant in May or August.

Plans call for the creation of a nameplate 100 million gallon per year plant that will chew up some 37 million bushels of locally grown corn annually. Costs to build the plant are in the $160 million range, and the facility is expected to be fully operational by late 2008 or early 2009.

There is currently over 1 billion gallons of additional grassroot ethanol capacity under construction in the state of Iowa representing a capital investment nearing $1.6 billion.
