Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Economic downturn or not, the U.S. has a large amount of industrial project construction under way. More than $203 billion in industrial projects are currently under construction in the U.S. The top 10 states for industrial construction account for nearly 50% of the project activity by value and include: Texas, New York, Louisiana, Illinois, Indiana, California, South Carolina, Tennessee, North Carolina and Pennsylvania.
Click on the image at right to view a chart showing the top 10 states for industrial construction.Texas leads all states with 187 industrial projects under construction totaling more than $22 billion. Texas continues to attract investment for energy projects and became the nation's leading producer of wind power last year. Power Generation ($7.7 billion), Oil & Gas ($4.6 billion), Petroleum Refining ($4.1 billion) and Pharma-Biotech research ($2.7 billion) are all attracting a significant amount of investment in the state. One of the largest projects under construction in Texas is a $2 billion grassroot coal-fired power plant in Franklin. Oak Grove Management Company LLC (Dallas, Texas) is planning a late 2009 completion on the project, which will use supercritical boilers to produce 1,600 megawatts of electricity. Fluor Enterprises is providing engineering and construction services.
Second on the list is New York with 67 projects totaling more than $11 billion. In New York, the Industrial Manufacturing Industry, with $4.4 billion, and the Pharma-Biotech Industry, with $4.1 billion, both exceed the Power Industry, which has $1.7 billion in projects under construction. Infrastructure and research construction make up the majority of the major industrial construction in progress in the state. A prime example of this is the $3.8 billion first-phase construction of the Second Avenue Subway project being developed by MTA Capital Construction Company (New York, New York).
Third is Louisiana with 74 projects totaling more than $9.2 billion. Energy and petrochemical development dominates industrial construction in the state, accounting for about 90% of the activity for projects in Petroleum Refining ($2.4 billion), Chemical Processing ($1.9 billion), Oil & Gas Terminals ($1.9), Power ($1.4 billion) and Oil & Gas Transmission ($526 million).
