Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--As the "fiscal cliff" deal passed by the U.S. Congress includes tax-credit extensions for cellulosic biofuels, biodiesel and renewable diesel, there are a handful of advanced biofuel projects to watch closely in 2013.
There are eight projects that are expected to see major advances this year, and two of these projects already have moved from pre-development into the field.
POET LLC (Sioux Falls, South Dakota) is working toward completing its conversion project from corn to cellulosic-based ethanol by the fourth quarter of 2013. The plant will convert corn stover and cobs into 25 million gallons per year of fuel ethanol.
Abengoa Bioenergy Corporation's (Hugoton, Kansas) Hugoton project is on just about the same construction schedule as the POET project. The company is anticipating an October or November completion of its 23 million-gallon-per-year plant.
Diamond Green Diesel LLC is expecting to make strides toward completing its 137 million-gallon-per-year biofuels plant in Norco, Louisiana, by the end of 2013, with a planned early 2014 start-up.
INEOS New Planet BioEnergy LLC's project in Vero Beach, Florida, which is expected to be completed by September 2013, will have the capacity to produce 8 million gallons per year of cellulosic ethanol from waste streams. The company is a joint venture between INEOS Bio (Gladbeck, Germany) and New Planet Energy Florida LLC (Vero Beach).
KiOR Incorporated's (Pasadena, Texas) commercial-scale plant in Columbus, Mississippi, has been completed, but the company does not expect full commissioning until the second quarter of 2013.
Gevo (Englewood, Colorado) is working on completing its conversion to isobutanol project at the Agri-Energy plant in Luverne, Minnesota. The company is expecting to produce fuel by the second quarter of this year.
BlueFire Ethanol Incorporated (OTC:BFRE) (Irvine, California) is expected to start construction later this year and start-up in 2014 on a cellulosic fuel ethanol plant that will be in Fulton, Mississippi.
The Mascoma Corporation (Boston, Massachusetts) project in Kinross, Michigan, is expected to secure some government funding and start construction later this year.
