Researched by Industrial Info Re-sources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Turkey's newest windfarms, which were established last year, added 470 megawatts (MW) to the country's installed wind power capacity, increasing the total to 1,799 MW, according to the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA).
The 36% increase put the country in the top-10 European wind energy producers for the first time. Germany and Spain are the top two wind energy producers in Europe. In 2011, 9,616 MW of wind energy capacity was installed in the Euproean Union (EU), for a total of 93,957 MW, which is enough to supply 6.3% of the EU's electricity.
Turkey increasingly has turned to its renewable sources to drive its booming economy, and the share of wind power in total installed capacity will increase exponentially over the next 10 years. The country aims to install some 20,000 MW of windfarms by 2023.
