Xinjiang's Three Major Polluters to Renovate Plants

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Huadian Weihuliang Power Company (Urumqi, Xinjiang Autonomous Region) began a smoke- and gas-desulfurization project, the first in the region, on April 22, 2008. The plant will renovate its two 125-megawatt (MW) power generators by December. The generators will be able to reduce sulfur emissions by 9,650 tons per year, or 95%. Smoke emissions will also be reduced by 250 tons per year.

The $114.3 million renovation project will use a lime-gypsum method to absorb pollutants. CPI Yuanda Environmental-Protection Engineering Company Limited (Chongqing City) will be in charge of the renovation. The deal asks the Chongqing company to finish heated adjustments and the 168-hour trial run before September 30.

The Weihuliang power plant is one of Urumqi's three coal-fired power plants without pollution-prevention methods. About one-third of the city's pollution is emitted from the power plants. Sulfur-dioxide emissions and chemical oxygen demand data failed to meet the state standard in the past two years, inviting an ultimatum from governmental environment-protection departments at different levels.

The Huadian Hongyanchi power plant, another one of the three, is reportedly planning to begin its own renovation project in September. The estimated $31.4 million project will help the power plant lower its SO2 to less than 7,000 tons a year.

The Guodian Hongyanchi power plant, the third big source of pollution, will install two 300 MW subcritical extraction condensing steam turbine generators and related desulfurization equipment. This $357.1 project is expected to start in first half of the year.

China Huadian Corporation (Beijing) owns the Huadian Weihuliang and Huadian Hongyanchi plants, and China Guodian Corporation (Beijing) owns the Guodian Hongyanchi power plant.
