D.E. Shaw's activity in the Rockies region is primarily in Colorado, New Mexico and Utah. One of the company's largest projects in New Mexico is in the process of wrapping up. The Arroyo solar facility in McKinley County is being built on the site of retired units of the San Juan Generating Station, a coal-fired power station that began operating in 1973, the last operating unit of which was decommissioned last year. Construction on the solar farm kicked off in 2021, and the facility will use approximately 1 million single-tracking solar panels to provide a nameplate generating capacity of 300 megawatts (MW). Accompanying the solar generation will be a 150-MW BESS to provide power in times of high demand or when the sun isn't shining. D.E. Shaw also has several smaller solar projects underway in the Rocky Mountains region. Examples include the Elektron solar energy facility near Tooele, Utah, construction of which began in late 2021. The Elektron facility will use approximately 200,000 First Solar Incorporated (NASDAQ:FSLR) (Tempe, Arizona) solar modules to provide nameplate generation of 80 MW. Outside of the Rockies region, two of D.E. Shaw's largest renewable energy projects are with the Highland I and Highland II solar facilities in Mowrystown, Ohio. Both projects kicked off construction in 2021. The Highland I portion will use 331,000 bifacial solar panels on a single-axis tracking system to provide 100 MW of power. The larger Highland II portion will use more than 640,000 solar panels on a single-axis tracking system to provide nameplate generation of 200 MW. Other notable D.E. Shaw solar projects underway include the River Fork solar plant near Albion, Michigan. The facility will use 560,000 Jinko solar panels on a single-axis tracking system to provide 149 MW of power. D.E. Shaw has signed power purchase agreements for the facility's output, with 100 MW designated to Consumers Energy (Jackson, Michigan) and 49 MW to go to DTE Energy Company (NYSE:DTE) (Detroit, Michigan).
