The Government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo is accelerating plans to expand large-scale hydropower development, aiming to unlock the Congo River's estimated 100 gigawatts of potential renewable energy.
At the center of this strategy is the Grand Inga hydropower complex on the Congo River. When fully developed, the multi-phase project could deliver over 40 GW of installed capacity, potentially making it the world's largest power generation facility. Inga III is the next and currently prioritized phase of this broader development, which is expected to produce around 4.8-11 GW.
These upcoming hydro projects can transform the country's energy sector and significantly improve electricity access across the region. The developments could also support economic growth while providing reliable renewable energy for industries, homes, and neighboring countries.
The World Bank approved an initial US$250 million financing package in 2025 as part of a broader program to support early development activities and infrastructure linked to the Inga III project.
In Democratic Republic of the Congo, IIR is tracking eight hydropower projects with a combined capacity of 11.5 GW, worth US$22.94 billion. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence Power Project Database can view a list of detailed project reports.
