Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--While the U.S. Power Industry has seen some slowdown due to the coronavirus pandemic, most projects simply have been delayed somewhat, with anticipated start dates moved into the future. This is particularly true of nonessential maintenance projects. Industrial Info's industry experts expect spending in the sector to return to relatively normal levels in the future. In the U.S., among the strongest areas for power project development is the Great Lakes market region, which includes Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin, where Industrial Info is tracking more than $993 million worth of projects that are planned to kick off in third-quarter 2020.

While the areas surrounding the shores of the Great Lakes themselves have been home to many wind power projects, solar is the leading the fuel type for second-quarter project starts in the region for project value. Among these projects is Creekwood Energy Partners LLC's (Cincinnati, Ohio) planned 100-megawatt (MW) solar farm in Hillsboro, Ohio, about 40 miles east of Cincinnati. The facility will use approximately 310,000 photovoltaic solar panels. Completion is set for the second quarter of 2021. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Other smaller solar facilities also are planned for the region, such as American Electric Power Company Incorporated's (NYSE:AEP) (AEP) (Columbus, Ohio) photovoltaic solar farm planned for Granger, Indiana, in the north of the state. The facility will be built on a 200-acre site and will use 60,000 solar panels to generate 20 MW. IEA White Construction (Clinton, Indiana) is providing engineering, procurement and construction on the project, which is expected to be completed by the end of this year. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
In Matteson Township, Michigan, DTE Energy Company (NYSE:DTE) (Detroit, Michigan) plans to kick off construction on a windfarm. The 119-MW Branch County Windfarm will use 70 1.7-MW wind turbines. Construction is planned to kick off late in the quarter and be completed in mid-2021. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
While grassroot coal-fired construction has ground to a halt in the U.S., in-plant capital projects at operational coal-fired plants continues. In Newburgh, Indiana, Vectren Energy (Evansville, Indiana) will be installing a flue gas desulfurization system on the dry-bottom boiler of the 265-MW Unit 3 at the F.B. Culley Power Station. The project, planned for completion by the end of the year, will enable the plant to comply with U.S. Coal Combustion Residuals (CCR) regulations. Burns & McDonnell Incorporated (Kansas City, Missouri) is providing engineering on the project, which has an estimated total investment value of $30 million. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Among the transmission projects planned to kick off this quarter is AEP's planned transmission line rebuild in northwestern Ohio from the East Lima substation to the Maddox Creek substation. The project entails rebuilding 29.4 miles of existing line, the removal of existing double-circuit lattice towers and the installation of single-circuit steel monopole structures. The $37 million project is planned to kick off this summer and be completed in late 2021. AECOM (NYSE:ACM) (Los Angeles, California) is a consultant. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Three nuclear refueling outages also are scheduled to start in the quarter. Among these is NextEra Energy Incorporated's (NYSE:NEE) (Juno Beach, Florida) refueling of the 600-MW Unit 1 at the Point Beach Nuclear Station in Two Rivers, Wisconsin. The outage is expected to begin in September and take approximately 26 days until completion in October. BHI Energy (Plymouth, Massachusetts) is a contractor. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
