Summary
The U.K. government is accelerating its renewable energy drive by giving the green light to three new offshore wind farms.
Three offshore wind farms with a combined generating capacity up to 4 gigawatts (GW) have been granted planning permits by the U.K. government.
Permission was approved by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DSNEZ) for the Dogger Bank South East and Dogger Bank South West wind farms off the northeast coast of England, each with a capacity of 1.5 GW, and the North Falls wind farm off the east coast with up to 1 GW of capacity. The Dogger Bank wind farms are being developed by RWE and Masdar, while North Falls is being developed by RWE and SSE Renewables. According to Industrial Info Resources data, there are four Dogger Bank projects in total, with a combined investment value of more than US$13 billion. In January, the projects successfully secured Contracts for Difference (CfD) with the U.K. Government through the Allocation Round 7 (AR7). A final investment decision (FID) is expected in 2027.
Clean Energy 2030
The U.K.'s Labour-led government has been proactive in its desire to transition the U.K. to renewable energy, backed by reinvestment in nuclear power, including small modular reactor (SMR) technology, and an overhaul of the planning process to accelerate permits for larger solar, wind and battery storage projects. It set out its Clean Power 2030 targets at the end of 2024, aiming for 95% of generated power from clean sources by 2030. In 2025, that percentage stood at 63.7%, but is different region to region. In 2024, clean power made up 90% of generation in Scotland, 63% in England, 44% in Northern Ireland and 34% in Wales. Most of the growth in the U.K. in recent years has come from offshore wind. At 26%, offshore wind was the largest single source of total clean generation in the U.K. in 2025, according to government data, and remains the largest source of clean generation since it overtook nuclear power in 2023. However, even the government notes that to achieve its ambitious clean energy targets, its share of variable renewable generation (solar, wind etc.) would have to increase at a much faster rate than previously up to 2030.
Industry Response
Clean energy trade association, RenewableUK, welcomed the news, calling the decision a "milestone moment" for U.K. wind. "These projects will provide up to 4 GW of new offshore wind capacity, equivalent to a quarter of the U.K.'s entire current offshore wind fleet," said chief executive officer Tara Singh. "That's enough to power over four million homes a year. These projects will draw in billions of pounds of private investment in vital new clean energy infrastructure and create hundreds of new jobs during their development, construction and operation, as well as fresh opportunities for UK supply chain companies."
Key Takeaways
- U.K. approves three offshore wind projects with a capacity of up to 4 GW.
- The government is aiming for up to 100% clean energy generation by 2030.
- Offshore wind accounts for more than a quarter of the U.K.'s renewable energy.
