The U.S. Department of the Interior has issued new well permits despite the 2019 government shutdown. Twenty-four new well permits had been issued for the Gulf of Mexico as of March 26, a 26% increase from the 19 new well permits that were issued during the same period in 2018. Thirty-eight percent of these new wells are classified as exploratory wells.
BP Exploration (London, England) Leads with nine new well permits, including seven at Mad Dog Spur and two at Na Kika FPDS. Three new permits were issued to Arena Offshore, LP (The Woodlands, Texas), including two at ST-52-A and one at EI-341-A. Three new well permits were issued to Shell Offshore Incorporated (Houston, Texas), including one at Auger TLP Plant and two possibly at Perdido Spar.
Two new exploratory well permits were issued to Chevron (San Ramon, California), both in MC-434. No nearby platform is owned by Chevron.
Two new well permits were issued to Fieldwood Energy LLC (Houston), including one at the wellhead platform for SS-169-C and one at Bullwinkle TLP. One new well permit was issued to Anadarko Petroleum Corporation (The Woodlands) at Horn Mountain Platform. One new well permit was issued to W & T Offshore, Incorporated (Houston) at the Medusa Spar. One new well permit was issued to Byron Energy Incorporated (Melbourne, Australia) at SM-73-D. One new well permit was issued to Walter Oil & Gas Corporation (Houston) at the Coelacanth Field Platform. One new well permit was issued to with Cantium, LLC (Covington, Louisiana) at wellhead platform for GI-37-R.
