Kenya Raises Renewable Energy Target to 5,500 MW for 2034

Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) has significantly expanded its long-term clean energy strategy, increasing its development pipeline to 5,500 MW by 2034.

Released Monday, July 13, 2026

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) has significantly expanded its long-term clean energy strategy, increasing its development pipeline to 5,500 megawatts (MW) by 2034 from the 1,500 MW target set under the G2G 2034 corporate strategy. The revised pipeline reflects rising regional electricity demand and includes expanded geothermal development, more than 700 MW of hydropower, and a planned 2,000 MW nuclear program to diversify Kenya's low-carbon generation portfolio.

The announcement accompanied KenGen's inaugural Sustainability Report, which highlights the company's strong environmental performance. During the reporting period, 94.4% of electricity dispatched originated from renewable sources, while KenGen generated 6.9 million carbon credits and recorded a carbon intensity of 0.06089 tCO₂e/MWh, placing it among Africa's lowest-emitting power producers. The utility, which supplies over 60% of Kenya's electricity, also reported continued progress in reforestation, community development, and governance aligned with Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Standards and United Nations Global Compact principles.

Industrial Info Resources is tracking 133 power projects worth US$26.90 billion (USD) in Kenya.
