Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The greater Los Angeles area in California is home to at least $622 million in project kickoffs this quarter, including a natural gas storage compressor, a mass transit rail expansion and a refinery-related addition.

Industrial Info is tracking 37 fourth-quarter 2015 construction kickoffs for projects in Los Angeles County. This includes 32 projects, worth $488 million in total investment value, which are in the construction and engineering phases. Five projects, worth $125 million, are still in the planning phases, where plenty of factors could alter their timing or even their ultimate outcome.

By industry, a single natural gas compressor station replacement, worth $205 million, puts oil, gas and chemical terminals at the head of the pack in terms of overall value. Southern California Gas Company (Los Angeles), which is part of Sempra Energy (NYSE:SRE) (San Diego, California), is pushing forward with an anticipated November kickoff at the Aliso Canyon natural gas storage facility near Northridge. The work includes the removal and replacement of three General Electric (NYSE:GE) compressor units, which were installed in 1971. Kiewit Corporation (Omaha, Nebraska) is performing the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) work. Next comes Industrial Manufacturing, with six projects worth $152 million. The biggest of these is the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority's $88 million Raymer-to-Bernson double track rail expansion, which involves construction of 6.4 miles of double track between Van Nuys and Chatsworth. A double track bridge will be installed over Bull Creek, a single track bridge over Limekiln Creek, and a two-side platform at the Metrolink Northridge Station.

The timing of public mass transit projects can be somewhat iffy, due to vagaries in funding and other issues, but if all goes according to plan, the project will kick off in December and be completed in fourth-quarter 2017. J.L. Patterson & Associates Incorporated (Orange County, California) was helping to perform the project scope for the expansion. In third place is Petroleum Refining, with 11 projects totaling $110 million in value. A 35-megawatt (MW) cogeneration unit addition at Valero Energy Corporation's (NYSE:VLO) (San Antonio, Texas) 135 barrel-per-day Wilmington refinery is set to kick off this month. The $35 million unit will be used to power the refinery, which currently gets its electricity from the City of Los Angeles and a cogeneration unit located at a nearby Air Products (NYSE:APD) (Allentown, Pennsylvania) hydrogen plant.
