Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Moroccan energy landscape is evolving, with energy transition taking center stage. After years of reliance on imported fossil fuels to meet its power needs, Morocco is tapping into its solar, wind and hydro potential.
Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) database is tracking about 90 active capital-spending projects, totaling more than US$27 billion of investment, for power generation, transmission and distribution across Morocco. About 64% of the spending is aimed at grassroot projects, while 29% is aimed at electricity-transmission projects.
More than half of the investment is aimed at projects fueled by natural gas, while about 43% is aimed at clean-energy projects, with solar accounting for the major share (26%).
Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Power Plant and Project databases can learn more about Morocco's projects--including capacities, investment values and necessary equipment--from a detailed list of project reports.
Last year, Morocco generated about 46% of its electricity from renewable sources, which now represent 5.6 gigawatts (GW) of its overall installed capacity of 12 GW, according to Green Times. The nation intends to scale up renewable power by tripling clean energy capacity to more than 15 GW by 2030, growing the share of renewables in the country's energy mix to 52% by 2030 and 80% by 2050. Morocco aims to cut its emissions 53% by 2035.
Morocco's 2023-27 National Electricity Plan aims to add 15 GW of additional generation capacity, with 80% likely coming from renewable sources, according to PV KnowHow. At the same time, Morocco is enhancing its power grid infrastructure to support a large share of different renewable sources.
Traditional sources like coal, heretofore the dominant source of power generation in Morocco, are imported largely from countries like the U.S., Colombia, South Africa and Spain. However, Morocco seeks to decarbonize the electricity mix in line with climate commitments and a pledged phase-out of coal by 2040.
Morocco continues to invest in natural gas infrastructure, including LNG terminals and natural gas pipelines. Posing as a bridge fuel, natural gas helps Morocco to maintain reliability while aligning with clean energy expansion.
