Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--U.K. energy regulator Ofgem has approved the Nautilus interconnector, an undersea high-voltage power cable that will link Belgium and the U.K. The 1.4-gigawatt (GW) would be more powerful than the existing NemoLink, which has a capacity of 1 GW.
The Nautilus project, developed by Belgian high-voltage grid operator Elia (Brussels) in collaboration with the U.K.'s National Grid plc (London), will not only transfer power between the two countries but also facilitate the import of offshore wind energy from the U.K. The cable will link the U.K. coast to Princess Elisabeth Island, an artificial energy island being developed by Elia off Belgium's Flemish coast.
The project is part of Belgium's energy infrastructure and has been included in the Belgian Federal Development Plan, as well as recognized by the European Commission as a project of mutual interest (PMI).
