Summary

Amid record gas-generated power consumption, U.S. plant operators are plotting nearly 100 maintenance-related kickoffs in the second quarter.

Two Western Providers Lead the Pack

U.S. natural gas consumption averaged a record 92 billion cubic feet per day in 2025, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), and operators are trying to keep their plants in the best shape to accommodate demand. Industrial Info is tracking nearly 100 maintenance-related projects at U.S. natural gas-fired power plants that are set to begin in the second quarter, with Constellation Energy Corporation and subsidiaries of Berkshire Hathaway Incorporated accounting for more than any other parent company.

Constellation accounts for more investment than any other parent company, with more than $42 million worth of maintenance slated to kick off before the end of June. This includes two natural gas-fired, combined-cycle (NGCC) plants in California: the 612-megawatt (MW) Metcalf Energy Center in Coyote, which comprises a pair of heavy-frame combustion turbines and a cooling-tower steam turbine, all from Siemens AG; and the 689-MW Otay Mesa Energy Center in San Diego, which comprises a pair of heavy-frame combustion turbines from General Electric (GE) and a steam turbine from Siemens.

Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Power Plant and Project databases can learn more about these projects--including capacities, investment values and necessary equipment--from profiles of the Metcalf and Otay Mesa plants and detailed reports on the Metcalf and Otay Mesa outages.

Earlier this year, Constellation expanded its footprint in gas-fired power generation with its acquisition of Calpine Corporation, which Constellation executives said could make their company the largest producer of electricity in the U.S. "by uniting Constellation's zero-emission nuclear fleet with Calpine's industry-leading natural gas and geothermal generation." Constellation already operates the largest nuclear fleet of any U.S. company. For more information, see January 9, 2026, article - Constellation Energy Completes Calpine Acquisition.

Berkshire is planning to spend only a little less than Constellation on its second-quarter outages. Its subsidiary PacifiCorp, a utility that operates in six Western states, is preparing for outages at two units in Utah: the 654-MW, NGCC Power Block 2 at the Lake Side Generating Station in Vineyard, which comprises a pair of heavy-frame combustion turbines and a steam turbine, all from Siemens; and the 71-MW Unit 4 at the Gadsby Power Station in Salt Lake City, a simple-cycle combustion turbine from GE.

Subscribers can learn from profiles of the Lake Side and Gadsby plants and detailed reports on the Lake Side and Gadsby outages.

By the Numbers
  • Nearly 100: Maintenance projects at U.S. gas-fired plants set to begin in the second quarter, according to Industrial Info
  • More than $42 million: Total investment in second-quarter maintenance kickoffs from Constellation
  • More than $93 million: Total investment in second-quarter maintenance kickoffs within the U.S. Northeast region

Engie, Kenon Lead in Northeast

By total investment value, the U.S. Northeast leads regionally in second-quarter maintenance kickoffs at U.S. gas-fired plants. Engie S.A. is one of the major operators in the area, which comprises Delaware, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania. Engie and Kenon Holdings account for the largest number of projects for any company operating in the area, at two each.

Engie is preparing for a pair of outages at the 520-MW Block 1 and 520-MW Block 2 at its NGCC plant in Astoria, New York. Each unit comprises a pair of heavy-frame combustion turbines and a steam turbine, all from GE. Subscribers can learn from a plant profile and detailed reports on outages on Block 1 and Block 2.

Kenon's projects include two outages from subsidiary Competitive Power Ventures (CPV): the 222-MW, NGCC Unit 1A at the Woodbridge Energy Center in Keasbey, New Jersey, and the 1-GW, NGCC Block 1 at the Valley Energy Center in Middletown, New York. Last month, CPV announced it would expand its retail energy operations into the New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) market, allowing it to provide its renewables-based services to commercial and industrial customers across New York, in addition to the existing gas-fired services.

Subscribers can learn from profiles of the Woodbridge and Valley plants and detailed reports on the Woodbridge and Valley outages.
