Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has approved the license renewal of Florida Power & Light Company's (FPL) (Juno Beach, Florida) Turkey Point Nuclear Power Plant units 3 and 4, effectively extending the lives of the units through 2052 and 2053, respectively, the company said Wednesday.
Located near Homestead 25 miles south of Miami, Florida, Turkey Point Unit 3 began commercial operation in 1972, followed by Unit 4 in 1973. The facility generates enough energy to power nearly 1 million homes and businesses, according to FPL.
Turkey Point was the first nuclear plant in the U.S. to receive a subsequent license renewal approval for an additional 20 years in 2019, FPL said, but the NRC then said it needed more information for its general environmental review and reset the previous operating license expiration dates of 2032 and 2033.
"Since then, FPL completed the rigorous reapplication process, providing additional documents for a site-specific environmental impact statement that led to restoring the initial subsequent license approval," the company said.
FPL is a subsidiary of NextEra Energy Incorporated (NYSE:NEE) (Juno Beach).
